Description
Home saved seed. A winter squash, so one that will store well, delicious nutty flavour. Quite small in size.
- Sow April to May individually in modules or small pots and cover with 1 cm compost and keep moist. For winter squash and large fruiting varieties, its important to sow early rather than later, so try to sow April. If it’s still cold they’ll benefit from being somewhere warm to germinate so a heat mat is ideal, especially important for winter squash or large fruiting varieties. Once germinated move to an area with plenty of light.
- Transplant when seedlings are large enough (two sets of leaves) into 3 inch pots, bury the seedling up to its first leaves, water in and leave and grow on. Keep the compost moist but not wet. At this point I would remove from any direct heat but still continue to keep in a warm environment.
- Final planting outside May – June. If you plant early I would cover with some fleece until late May/June. Plant into final position, they are hungry pants and need space, at least 60cm and they love the sun
