My Sowing Calendar

This will help you to sow my seeds at the best time, it’s not a set rule by any means, but don’t stray too far from the sowing times to get best results. Many seeds can be resown later in the year. Seed sowing is based on sowing into trays or modules to germinate inside ( under cover ) unless stated. Germinating seeds early in the year (until approx. May) requires some warmth so use an electric propagator, warming soil cables, an airing cupboard or a warm windowsill. Once germinated make sure seeds are moved to an area with plenty of light.

I sow most of my seed into trays and prick out into individual module trays to grow on. After pricking out I keep modules undercover such as a greenhouse until planting time.From module trays they are planted out into the ground, sometimes if space is short you can pot up into a larger pot until ready to plant out.

Direct sowing is sowing seed outside directly into your prepared veg bed. 

January (late January) Onions and Shallot seeds, Broad Beans, Beetroot, Cabbage for early picking. 

February  Lettuce, Spinach, Spring Onions, Broad beans, Peppers, Aubergines, Chilli, Parsley, Dill, Coriander, Cabbage for early picking, Kohrabi, Beetroot, Peas for harvesting shoots. Shallot and Onion seeds

Direct: Broad Beans, Garlic

March Lettuce, Spinach, Spring Onions, Broad beans, Peppers, Aubergines, Chilli, Parsley, Dill, Coriander, Cabbage for early picking, Kohrabi, Beetroot, Radish, Peas for harvesting shoots and for podding. Tomatoes, Melons, Celery and Celeriac.

Direct:  Dill, Parsnips, Coriander, Parsley, Radish, Carrot, Garlic, Potatoes ( first earlies )

April Carrots and parsnips, Lettuce, Spinach, Spring Onions, Broad beans, Peppers, Aubergines, Melon, Celery, Celariac, Chilli, Parsley, Dill, Coriander, Cabbage, Khorabi, Beetroot, Radish, Peas for podding. Chard, Leeks, Courgette, Squash, Sweetcorn, Cucumbers. 

Direct: Tomatoes, Leek, Spring Onion, Chard, Autumn and Winter Brassicas (kale, cauliflower, cabbage) Carrots and  Parsnips, Parsley, Peas, Lettuce, Spinach. 

May Same as April but also Brussel sprouts, Cauliflower, French and Climbing Beans. Cucumber for growing outside

Direct: Most seeds are now OK to be sown outside as the soil will be warm enough. Sweetcorn, Courgette, Squash, French and Climbing Beans, Leek, Beetroot, Chard, Winter Brassicas (kale, cauli,cabbage) Spring Onions, Potatoes, Carrots and Parsnips. 

June Kale, Purple Sprouting Broccoli (PSB), Cauliflower, Calabrese, Endive, Chicory, Lettuce.

Direct: Beetroot, Dwarf and Climbing Beans, Carrots, Swede, Chard, Kale, PSB, Cauliflower, Calabrese, Endive, Chicory.

July Florence Fennel, Beetroot, Lettuce for autumn picking, Chard, Chicory, Chervil, Endive, Kale, Chinese Cabbage, Coriander, Rocket ( wild) 

Direct: Beetroot, lettuce, Florence fennel, Chervil, Coriander, Carrots, Chinese Cabbage.

August Rocket, Mustard, Pak Choi, Coriander, Dill, Spinach, Mooli, Endive, Fennel, Lettuce, Rocket ( both salad and wild) land Cress. In late August shallots, spring onions can be overwintered if they are covered also spinach and spring cabbage. 

Direct: As inside sowings but sow early to mid August for best results.

September Great month for winter salad leaves grown under cover for some protection. Lettuce, Mustard, Mizuna, Pack Choi, Spinach, Chard, Rocket, Coriander, Parsley, Chervil, Dill, Kale, Spring Onions 

Direct: Lambs lettuce, Salad Rocket, Mizuna, Lettuce, Spinach, Chervil, Coriander and Dill.

October Direct: Garlic, over wintering varieties of Onions

November Broad Beans to overwinter for an early crop the following year
