Dwarf Runner Bean – Hestia

Grow delicious runner beans without needing a huge frame or lots of garden space. Dwarf Runner Bean ‘Hestia’ is a compact, productive variety that is perfect for pots, patios, raised beds and smaller vegetable gardens.

The neat plants produce attractive red and white flowers followed by generous crops of long, slim, stringless green beans with a lovely traditional runner bean flavour.
Growing to approximately 40–45cm tall, Hestia stays much shorter than standard runner beans and usually needs little or no support. It is an excellent choice for container growing, windy gardens or anyone who wants fresh runner beans without building a tall climbing structure.

Sow indoors from May to June, or direct outdoors from early June once the soil has warmed and the risk of frost has passed. Sow one seed 2–3cm deep into a large module or small pot, or sow two seeds per position outdoors and remove the weaker seedling after germination.
Plant approximately 20cm apart, with 45–50cm between rows. Hestia is a dwarf variety and does not need a tall climbing frame, although short supports may help in exposed positions.
Keep well watered, especially while flowering and producing beans. Pick regularly while the pods are young and tender to encourage a longer harvest.
