Broad Bean ‘ Karmazyn’

Grow something truly beautiful and delicious with Broad Bean ‘Karmazyn’. This unusual variety produces gorgeous blush-pink beans with a creamy texture and a wonderfully rich, sweet flavour.

The freshly shelled beans are almost too pretty to eat, with soft shades of pale pink, rose and cream. Thankfully, they taste every bit as good as they look. Karmazyn is a productive variety and a lovely choice for gardeners who enjoy growing vegetables that are a little different from those found in the shops.

The young beans are particularly tender and delicious, while more mature beans can be used in soups, stews, salads and all your usual broad bean recipes.

🌱 Growing Information

Prepare the soil before sowing by incorporating plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost.

Sow the beans approximately 5cm deep and 25cm apart. They can be grown in single rows approximately 45cm apart, or in double rows set 25cm apart with around 60cm between each pair of rows.

Water well after sowing. Germination usually takes approximately 10–14 days.

Support the plants with canes and string as they grow, particularly in exposed or windy gardens. Keep well watered, especially once the flowers appear and the pods begin to form.

Pinch out the growing tips after the first flowers have set. This can help discourage blackfly and encourage the plants to concentrate their energy on producing pods.

Harvest from the bottom of the plant upwards once the beans begin to swell visibly inside the pods. Smaller beans are the sweetest and most tender, so pick regularly for the best flavour.
