Cauliflower
- A member of the Brassica family. Sow seed indoors from Feb- June or outdoors March to early June. I sow into seed trays or small pots, cover with a light covering of compost. Keep moist. Prick out when first two leaves appear and modules and grow on.
- Final planting – After about 4 weeks the seedlings will be ready to plant out so plant into final position 45-60cm apart, don’t make the mistake of getting them too close as they will take up a lot of space. There are smaller varieties which can be planted a bit closer.
- Care – March and April sowings will produce curds ( heads ) in June and early July. Sowing in June for some varieties means that they can grow through the winter and produce curds in Spring. When they get tall they will need staking for support especially if in a windy area and may need covering with mesh for bird ( pigeons are partial to brassicas) and insect protection.
