Fennel

Sowing fennel should be done indoors June through to early July or direct in July. Sow seeds into modules or small pots filled with compost, sow a few seeds per module and cover with a layer of compost, keep moist. The trick here is to not sow too early, otherwise the plant will flower before bulbs have developed, fennel flowers are lovely but not if you want the bulbs! I like to sow the beginning of July as its early enough for bulb formation but too late for flowers so an ideal time.
When large enough to handle and you can see some fresh green feathery growth thin to one plant in each module.
Plant out about 4 weeks after sowing, and space about 30cm apart.
