Annual phlox produces masses of colourful flowers throughout summer and is ideal for borders and cutting gardens.
Sowing
Sow indoors from March to April, or direct outdoors from May once the risk of frost has passed.
Sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost and cover with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite.
Ideal germination temperature is 18–20°C. Germination usually takes 10–21 days.
Potting On
When seedlings are large enough to handle, prick out into modules or small pots and grow on in a bright, cool position.
Planting Out
Harden off before planting outdoors.
Plant 20–25cm apart in full sun in well-drained soil.
Care
Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering.
Phlox prefers full sun and moderate watering. Avoid overly rich soil, which may produce more foliage than flowers.
