Description
Sow indoors. Surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost in a seed tray. Propagate at 18°C. Germination takes 10-14 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle transplant to 8cm pots, handle the root system carefully. Grow on in cooler conditions 7-13°C. Acclimatise and plant out once danger of frost has passed with 100cm spacing. Can be sown in an unheated greenhouse without propagation. Can be sown directly, germination takes 1-2 weeks approx.
Prefers fertile humus-rich well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and fertilizer in full sun. Pinch out growing tips to encourage bushy plants and stake where required. Water freely in dry periods. Prone to blackfly, treat as desired.
Cut flowers or deadhead to prolong flowering window. Cut back to ground level in the autumn before lifting and storing the tuber for the winter. Propagate from softwood cuttings taken in spring from stored tubers or divide tubers ensuring each one has a viable bud.
