Leek – Musselburgh

Description

Decent strong growing reliable variety, stands well against cold.

Sow seed indoors March – April, or direct in April, either singularly or by multisowing. For either methods use multipurpose compost and keep moist after sowing. Sow seed approx. 0.5cm deep.

For multi sowing, sow 5-7 seeds per module, then thin to 3-5 seedlings per module to grow on. Once they’ve grown to approx. the size of a pencil you can plant out as they are without splitting them up. You can then thin to 3-5 seedlings per module to grow on)

If you want to plant individually you can sow direct but the best method is to use a nursery bed (a space where you can raise mini leeks and then plant out to another area in final position).You can also scatter sow seeds into a large pot, grow them to a size of a pencil and then split them up at planting time. 

Final planting , as mentioned above, when they are each about the size of a pencil, they are then ready to be planted out. Can be planted out in clusters as they are in the modules with no more than 3-5 seedlings, or tease them out individually and plant into holes approx 10cm deep and water in. The stem that’s within the ground will remain white.If you have multisown you may end up with slightly smaller leeks but gently twist one leek away as you need them  leaving the remainder of the clump to grow on.
