Description
An old Heirloom semi-dwarf variety approximately 60-70cm (24-28in ) tall, producing stout stems of closely spaced sweet sprouts, for picking over a long harvest period from November to January.
Sow from April to May, best to sow in April for outdoor sowing direct. For sowing indoors, which is preferable with all brassicas, these seeds are perfect for sowing in seed trays, filled with compost, sow a group of seeds on the surface and then cover with a light sprinkling of compost. When they have two leaves and you can handle the germinated seeds, prick out individually into modules to grow on or sow a few seeds per module then thin to the strongest seedling.
They can take quite a lot of time to get established once they are in the ground and they need room, planting is about 6 weeks from sowing and space them about 60cm apart. With all brassicas you need to protect them against butterflies and their caterpillars so use mesh to cover them, I also spray with Bacillus Thuringiensis every 3 weeks from late June/early July when I remove the mesh covers.
