I sow in pots and then plant out when ready but you can sow directly where they are to flower. Sowing anytime from May-July. Sow 15mm deep into finely prepared soil which has be raked to a fine tilth. Sow 2 seeds together every 45cm. Seedlings appear in 14-21 days. When large enough to handle thin out the weaker of the two plants, replant elsewhere if required. Water well until established. If you’re like me and sow indoors these can be started as early as late April, sow into individual pots 15mm deep, place pots in a cold frame or greenhouse. Keep moist. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed.
Easy to grow. Ideally placed near a fence or wall. Water deeply but infrequently. Feed sparingly. Will require staking or a support.
If you wish to harvest the seed protect the flower head with garden fleece to deter squirrels and birds, or cut the head and dry indoors. Seeds ready approx. 30-45 days after bloom.
